Joshua Teed
The NFBA would like to congratulate Joshua on winning this year’s music scholarship. He is a great
inspiration to musicians young and old. Keep up the good work Joshua!
Below you will find his winning entry. He sent in both his handwritten and typed copies.
- What inspired your interest in Bluegrass Music?
I wanted to play Bluegrass because they play unlike any other fiddler I have ever seen. I started
playing when I was about five. My first fiddle piece was Boil Them Cabbages Down. Soon I started
going to fiddle concerts like Mike O’Connor and Barrage and I knew I wanted to play Bluegrass.
- What have you learned and accomplished already?
In May (2005) at the Florida Fold Festival, my teacher, Barbara Smith, and I won third place in
Twin Fiddle. I’m also in the North Florida Bluegrass Youth Band. I also play different kinds of
fiddle, like American/Traditional, Irish, and Gypsy. I am learning you can communicate through music.
- What are you aspirations in the Bluegrass Music field?
I hope someday I will get good enough to make an album. It will take a lot of practice though.
I would also like to play with Mark O’Connor, but again it would take a lot of practice. I would
also like to learn the history of Bluegrass so I can teach other people about it.
- What do you hope this scholarship will do for you?
I hope this scholarship will help learn more things about Bluegrass. I would also like to learn
new songs, and maybe someday I could teach my little brother, Charlie, how to play Bluegrass.
- Why do you think you deserve this scholarship?
I deserve this because I like to play the violin. I have also been playing for about 4 years.
I take a lot of lessons. I also have plans for when I get older, plus I practice every day for
an hour.
Thanks!
